Cancer! That word kept ringing through my mind constantly. I went to the hospital for a bullet wound and found out I had stage 4 lung cancer. The ironic thing is I didn’t even smoke, but I guess being locked up for ten years around nothing but cigarette smoke, will do that to you. They say secondhand smoke is the worst kind of smoke. Crazy, those fuckin’ bastards at the jail didn’t say shit to me. I had to have a full physical when I was released and they gave me a clean bill of health. Everything I had done to my son to get back on top of these streets was irrelevant now. I would be dead and gone in a couple of months and instead of spending my freedom getting to know my kids and grandkids, I was trying to take over the streets. I was an idiot, and now that I was dying I wanted my son back. He would never forgive me; shit, I taught him that. Once a nigga crosses you, it ain’t no coming back from that. My baby girl had been here by my side, despite what Prince told her to do, and I appreciated that. I thought back to the day I met her mother and smiled.

Macie was my right when everything was going wrong. I never looked at her as just a fuck or a side bitch, which is why I didn’t tell her about my wife in the beginning. I genuinely loved her but when she told me she was pregnant, I had to tell her about my wife and ask her to get rid of it. I knew that my wife would leave me and I could never allow that to happen. That would have torn my kids’ world apart. They were used to a two-parent home and I wanted to keep it that way. Now looking back, I should have reached out to Macie to check on her, but I was arrested a couple of weeks later and didn’t see the point. She had already told me she got the abortion so I didn’t see the need to further complicate her life, when I knew that I was going away for the rest of mine. Looking at Majestic, she looked like the perfect blend of me and Macie. She reminded me so much of Skye and I was glad that my kids were there for each other and had each other’s backs. I just hoped that once I was gone, they would make sure Deja and their little brother were good. I wanted my kids to grow up together, whether I was here or not.

“Daddy, you should really reconsider the radiation treatment.”

“I’m in stage 4 baby girl, the radiation won’t save me, it will just make me sick and I don’t want to go through that. My time is almost up and I have to live with that,” I told her as I kissed her forehead.
